There’s an important update from the UK Government that every Nigerian student planning to study in the UK must know about. Two big changes are coming:

  1. You’ll need to show more money in your bank account before getting a visa.
  2. Your post-study stay in the UK will be shorter after graduation.

1. You now need to show more money for your visa (starting November 11, 2025)

Before now, students only needed to show a smaller amount of money to prove they could pay for living expenses while studying in the UK.

Here’s what it used to be:

  • London: £1,483 per month — about £13,347 per year
  • Outside London: £1,136 per month — about £10,224 per year

But from November 11, 2025, the UK Government is increasing those amounts.

Here’s the new rule:

  • London: £1,529 per month
  • Outside London: £1,171 per month

This money shows that you can take care of your rent, food, and daily living costs while studying.

Example:
If you’re studying a 9-month course in London:
£1,529 × 9 months = £13,761 (about ₦27 million at ₦2,000/£1)

If your school is outside London:
£1,171 × 9 months = £10,539 (about ₦21 million)

Good news: If you apply for your visa before November 11, 2025, you can still use the old lower amount. So, it’s better to apply early and save some money.

2. Shorter time to stay and work after school (starts January 1, 2027)

The UK also changed how long international students can stay and work after graduation (this is called the Graduate Route).

Here’s the new rule:
• Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates: can now stay 18 months (before, it was 2 years)
• PhD graduates: can still stay 3 years

This means students will still be able to work after graduation, but you’ll now have a bit less time to find a job or get a work visa.

What this means for you, as a prospective Nigerian student

If you’re planning to study in the UK soon, these changes are very important for you:

• Plan your finances early — start saving or preparing your sponsor’s bank statement.
• Submit your visa application before November 11, 2025, to enjoy the old financial rate.
• When you graduate, make the most of your 18 months — get work experience, build your CV, or switch to a skilled worker visa before your time runs out.

Don’t worry — studying in the UK is still one of the best ways to get a world-class education, improve your career chances, and even explore long-term settlement opportunities. You just need to plan smarter.
